  • Throwing

    • Introduction to the wheel

    • Wedging clay

    • Centering

    • Creating simple forms such as bowls, cups or cylinders

    • Students make several pieces to practise

    Handbuilding

    • Introduction to pinch, coil and slab techniques

    • Joining and scoring

    • Building a simple vessel

    • Surface decoration and texture

  • Throwing

    • Continue developing wheel skills

    • Experiment with shape and form

    • Make additional pieces

    Trimming

    • Demonstrate how to trim leather-hard pieces

    • Create and refine foot rings

    • Clean up bases

    • Refine the shape and surface

    • Handbuilding and finishing off other hand built projects.

    Handbuilding

    • Develop another hand-built piece

    • Introduce handles, feet, lids or other attachments

    • Encourage students to combine techniques

    Aim: Refine the work from Week 1 while continuing to produce new pieces.

  • This becomes the main glazing and surface decoration week.

    • Introduction to the glazing process

    • Understanding bisque-fired pottery

    • Choosing glazes and colour combinations

    • Dipping, pouring and brushing

    • Layering glazes

    • Underglaze decoration

    • Wax resist

    • Sgraffito/carving

    • Cleaning glaze from the bottom of pieces

    • Preparing work for the final glaze firing

  • This can be the more creative/project-focused week.

    Introduce a slightly more ambitious handbuilding project, such as:

    • Slab-built vase

    • Sculptural vessel

    • Lidded pot

    • Candle holder

    • Planter

    • Decorative wall piece

    • Coil-built vessel

    You can also introduce:

    • Texture

    • Stamps

    • Carving

    • Slip decoration

    • Handles

    • Attachments

    • Combining slab, coil and pinch techniques

    Aim: Students create a new piece that can be glazed in Week 5.

  • The final week can focus on finishing the new handbuilt pieces from Week 4, as well as any pieces that weren't completed in Week 3.

    • Review glaze techniques

    • Choose colours/combinations

    • Glaze Week 4 pieces

    • Finish any remaining bisque pieces

    • Underglaze decoration

    • Layering and experimenting with glazes

    • Final inspection and cleaning

    • Prepare everything for the final firing

    You could finish the session with a little "pottery gallery" moment, where everyone lays out their pieces and talks about what they've made over the five weeks.
