Folklore
Violets have long been symbols of modesty, love, and quiet devotion. In folklore, they were associated with humility and faithfulness, often given as tokens of affection. Ancient traditions linked violets to protection and gentle healing, and they were sometimes planted near homes to bring peace and calm. Their low-growing nature and soft fragrance made them a symbol of hidden beauty and the strength found in gentleness.
Medicinal
Traditionally used for their soothing and cooling properties, violets were often prepared as syrups, teas, or salves. They were valued for easing coughs, sore throats, and respiratory discomfort, as well as calming inflammation and supporting skin health. Violet preparations were also used to gently support the lymphatic system.
Time of Year
March – May
Violets bloom in early to mid-spring, carpeting gardens, meadows, and woodland edges with shades of purple, blue, and sometimes white. Their delicate flowers and sweet scent signal the full arrival of spring, often thriving in shaded, damp environments.
